Mountain Pie Iron Equipment Review

Mountain Pie Iron, C. Palmer Mfg.

We have used many, many different mountain pie makers – double ones, fluted ones, round ones, and we were recently even gifted with a panini maker one. For awhile, we took them all to camp to keep everyone cooking. But, we noticed that people would wait to use a certain one (or two, because we had two of the same model). And, they were our favorites as well. Continue reading “Mountain Pie Iron Equipment Review”

Rhododendron Trail Review at Trough Creek State Park

I love Trough Creek State Park. If you aren’t from Central Pennsylvania, chances are slim that you’ve ever heard of it. It is an unknown gem. A stunning, quiet example of Pennsylvania’s beauty. When I go there, I am awed by its splendor. I may sound dramatic, but I truly love every rock, tree, and rhododendron on its hills. So, keep my opinion in mind when you hear me say anything about Trough Creek. as I am extremely biased.

Texas Sheet Cake

Let’s talk about the obvious. This is not a recipe that you make at camp. No, this chocolate delight is a make-at-home and throw in the car prepared kind of thing. The only thing that suits it for camping is that EVERYONE demands it. A few years ago, I tried a different dessert. A bar-type version of a camping classic. You know, the one that starts with s’m. I can’t say it. That trip I was badgered endlessly with the question, “What was wrong with the chocolate cake?” “I really could go for Texas Sheet Cake.”

The First Official Mountain Pie Cook-Off

The First Official Mountain Pie Cook-Off – 2012

It happened. The three of us that made it camping came loaded up with three recipes each for mountain pies and each night we prepped, cooked, and shared our entries into the mountain pie cook-off. Continue reading “The First Official Mountain Pie Cook-Off”

Shenango River Trail Review

Shenango River Trail

Not seeing too many options on our searches before reaching the Shenango River Recreation Area, we asked the ranger that stopped by our site about hiking. He kind of chuckled and responded with a statement that was translated to, “You want to hike? Here?” He went onto to explain that the trails were pretty unkept and he could not guarantee the condition of them, but would come back with a map. That he did. We went out to see for ourselves.

Have meat. Will camp.

Camp Marinades Perfect for Travel

When we take longer camping trips, we cook. Nothing is better than a great meal after a day outside. But meat and marinades were made for one another. I mix them at home and put them in Mason jars. They don’t leak and are easy to carry…besides, prefer glass to plastic when the base is acidic. Continue reading “Have meat. Will camp.”

The Classic Pizza Mountain Pie

Camping Basics: Favorite Pizza Mountain Pie

This is where it all started…the classic mountain pie. Pizza. How could you go wrong?

Well, you can’t go wrong with this, but you may tire of it. We finally did after twenty years and launched the Great Mountain Pie Cook-Off to add some new ideas to our late night cooking.

But always keep the ingredients to this one handy. Something tells me someone will get a hankering for it every trip and then everyone else will want one too. There are not quantities listed, as everyone is different… some like it extra cheesy and some extra saucy. Just make it how you like.
